Lowering Your Risk of Type 2 Diabetes
Oct 19, 2026

Type 2 diabetes is common, but it is often preventable, and even small changes can make a real difference. It develops slowly as the body struggles to keep blood sugar in a healthy range, so catching it early, or heading it off entirely, is very much possible.
Know your risk
Risk goes up with family history, carrying extra weight around the middle, a less active routine, high blood pressure, and age. Many people have prediabetes, a stage where blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet in the diabetes range, without knowing it. A simple blood test can tell you where you stand.
Steps that lower risk
Focus on realistic habits rather than perfection. Build meals around vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, and cut back on sugary drinks and refined carbohydrates. Move more throughout the day, aiming for about 150 minutes of activity each week. Losing even a modest amount of weight, if that applies to you, meaningfully lowers risk. Steady sleep and stress management help too.
Why early action matters
Keeping blood sugar healthy protects your heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves over the long run. If you already have prediabetes, these same steps can often prevent or delay diabetes, and your provider can guide a plan that fits your life.
When to seek care
See your provider if you notice increased thirst, frequent urination, unusual fatigue, or blurred vision. Seek emergency care or call 911 for confusion, difficulty breathing, severe vomiting, or fainting, which can signal a blood sugar emergency.
