Understanding Your A1c: What the Number Actually Means

Aug 6, 2026

Your A1c reflects your average blood sugar over roughly the previous three months. That’s why we use it rather than a single glucose reading — one number on one morning tells us very little, while an average tells us how your body is actually doing day to day.

Below 5.7% is considered normal. Between 5.7% and 6.4% falls in the prediabetes range, which is a warning worth taking seriously but also the stage where changes make the biggest difference. At 6.5% or above, we’re looking at diabetes.

For most patients already diagnosed, we aim below 7%. That target moves depending on your age, how long you’ve had diabetes, kidney function, and whether you’ve had episodes of low blood sugar. An older patient with heart disease may be safer at 7.5% than pushed toward 6.5%.

What actually moves the number: consistency more than perfection. Walking after meals, reducing liquid sugar, sleeping enough, and taking medication as prescribed will do more over three months than an aggressive two-week diet.

If your last A1c surprised you, that’s worth a conversation rather than a resolution to try harder alone.
